Boris Johnson’s mother, Charlotte Johnson Wahl, dies aged 79

The prime minister’s mother, Charlotte Johnson Wahl, has died aged 79.

A notification distributed in the Times paper said she passed on “out of nowhere and calmly” at St Mary’s Hospital in west London. Boris Johnson once portrayed his mom, who was a painter, as the “incomparable position” in the family. Senior figures from across the political range, including Labor pioneer Sir Keir Starmer, have sent their sympathies to Mr Johnson. Sir Keir tweeted: “I’m exceptionally sorry to learn of the PM’s misfortune. My sympathies to him and his family.” Traditionalist party administrator, Amanda Milling, said she was “considering Boris Johnson and his family this evening”, adding, “Our musings and supplications are with you.”Tory MP, Conor Burns, who is a companion of the leader, tweeted: “So tragic to know about the passing of Boris Johnson’s mum. Contemplations and petitions are with him and the entire of the Johnson faction.” Mrs Johnson Wahl, whose father was leader of the European Commission for Human Rights during the 1970s, hitched Stanley Johnson in 1963 preceding finishing her certificate at Oxford University as the principal wedded female undergrad at her school. The couple had four kids – Boris, columnist Rachel, previous priest Jo and earthy person Leo. They separated in 1979. As a craftsman, Mrs Johnson Wahl made her name as a picture painter, with entertainer Joanna Lumley and creator Jilly Cooper among her subjects. In 1988, she wedded American educator Nicholas Wahl and moved to New York – where she started painting cityscapes. She got back to London in 1996 after his passing. At 40 years old, she was determined to have Parkinson’s sickness however kept painting, steadying herself with a mobile edge as she worked.
